Designed for all drivers, the Light Rigid (LR) course equips drivers with the skills and knowledge to safely operate a light truck or minibus with confidence. This course is ideal for drivers who are required to drive an LR vehicle as a part of their work, as well as for sports clubs, socials clubs and schools.

Light Rigid (LR) TLILIC2014 Licence to Drive a Light Rigid Vehicle
A motor vehicle with a GVM of 8 tonnes or less but greater than 4.5 tonnes, or has a GVM of 8 tonnes or less and seats more than 12 adults (including the driver). Able to tow a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be instructed in the following components of safe Truck Driving:
- Performing cabin checks
- Performing pre-drive safety inspections
- Starting/Stopping sequence
- Turning and handling
- Reversing and manoeuvring
- Vehicle positioning
- System of vehicle control
- City and highway driving
Requirements to achieve a licence
Requirements to achieve an LR Licence
Be at least 19 years old
Have held an Australian car licence (other than a learner licence) for at least 12 months
At Service Tasmania, demonstrate evidence of identity and PASS a heavy vehicle rigid knowledge test
Pass a light rigid competency test, or training and final competency assessment with AJL
Return to Service Tasmania and
- Complete an application form
- Show evidence of identity
- Pass an eyesight test
- Produce a Certificate of Competency to demonstrate passing the relevant licence
- Pay the licence extension fee

LR Licence is a one day course
$ 1,195.00 per person Using AJL Truck
$ 890.00 per person Using own Truck
Price based on limited experience. Price includes National Accredited Training Course and the Final Competency Assessment (approx 7 hours)
Assessment using your own Vehicle Requirements
Should you wish to use your own vehicle and it fails to meet the criteria as outlined below, the training and assessment will cease at beginning of day, and reschedule fee of $500.00 will apply.
Main points are:
- Correct GVM or GCM for that class of licence that is required
- Vehicle must be loaded with at least 75% of the GVM for LR-HR
- Vehicle is Registered
- Comprehensive insurance
- Roadworthy
- Must have power supply to connect our camera into. e.g. cigarette socket
- Weighbridge docket no older than 24hrs prior to the assessment (if the truck has working scales a weighbridge ticket is not required)
- MUST be presented on the day – not conducted during the assessment
- Photographic evidence of the load (required for auditing purposes)
- A rigid truck above 4.5 tonnes GVM but less than or equal to 8 tonnes GVM, or
- A rigid bus with less than or equal to 8 tonnes GVM or seats more than 12 adults; including the driver

- Theory Session Prior To Your Driver Training
- Load Restraint practical assessment
- On Road Instruction and Final Competency Assessment utilising an approved Assessment Route
Course options
AJL Training have training facilities located in: East Devonport, Prospect and Macquarie Point.
In some circumstances we may be able to attend a client’s worksite (if meets criteria) however, all driving assessments must be conducted utilising an approved Assessment Route.
Assessment Outcome
Upon successful completion you will receive a Certificate of Competence, which you will need to take to Service Tasmania and apply for your truck licence
Successful participants will be enrolled with our partnering RTO - Wodonga Institute of TAFE (RTO no.3097) and will receive a Statement of Attainment issued by WIOT upon completion.
